[Hours before the new arrivals are due to appear in Teleios, Helen writes a note to the Doctor.]

Darling,

I'm uncertain if I want this letter to reach you or not, afraid what it might mean if it's discovered. But I don't know who else to turn to, what else to say except that I love you and I wish that you were here with me. Maybe things would start to make sense then. They certainly don't right now, and I fear they may not ever again.

I made a terrible mistake, Doctor. I thought I knew what I was doing. I'm finding that I don't know anything. I've lost you and without you here, I feel like I'm wandering the world without direction.

I miss you, darling. Terribly so. Each day, I find that I'm losing another part of myself. All I have left is my work and the unavoidable truth that I've never loved anyone as much as I love you. Knowing that I've ruined our chance at happiness, I can only hope that this will be worth it. At least then, I may be useful to someone, may give them a new chance at life.

If you're reading this, then I fear it means that my work has claimed my life once and for all. Please know that I have always and will always love you. I only wish I could have been stronger for you, for us. I regret each night that I could have spent in your arms but instead spent apart from you. And I only hope that you might remember me fondly, remember me as I was with you, because only then was I at my best.

I love you more than you could possibly know, Doctor.

Always,

Helen

[The note is folded and placed into the pocket of her lab coat. The intention is that if she does not survive, that it might be found and that someone might deliver the message to him on her behalf.]

FEATS

Educated: Pick two Knowledge skills. The character gets a +2 bonus on all checks with those skills.

Brawl: When making an unarmed attack, the character receives a +1 competence bonus on attack rolls, and the character deals nonlethal damage equal to 1d6 + his or her Strength modifier.

Personal Firearms Proficiency: The character can fire any personal firearm without penalty.

Precise Shot: The character can shoot or throw ranged weapons at an opponent engaged in melee without penalty.

Point Blank Shot: The character gets a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons against opponents within 30 feet.

Quick Draw: The character can draw a weapon as a free action.

Surgery: The character can use the Treat Injury skill to perform surgery without penalty. See the Treat Injury skill description.

Xenomedic: You can, without penalty, use the Treat Injury skill to perform surgery on a living creature regardless of its type. (prereq: surgery)

Elder Wisdom: +2 on all Knowledge skill checks. Gain 2 knowledge skills as class skills

Frightful Presence: When the character uses this feat, all opponents within 10 feet who have fewer levels than the character must make a Will saving throw (DC 10 + ½ the character’s level + the character’s Charisma modifier). An opponent who fails his or her save is shaken, taking a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saves, and skill checks for a number of rounds equal to 1d6 + the character’s Charisma modifier. The character can use the feat once per round as a free action.

A successful save indicates that the opponent is immune to the character’s use of this feat for 24 hours. This feat does not affect creatures with an Intelligence of 3 or lower.

Deceptive +2 on bluff and disguise

Iron will +2 on will saves

TALENTS

Smart Hero

Linguist: With this talent, the Smart hero becomes a master linguist. Whenever the hero encounters a new language, either spoken or written, that he or she does not know the Smart hero can make an Intelligence check to determine if he or she can understand it. The check is made with a bonus equal to the hero’s Smart level. For a written language, the bonus applies to a Decipher Script check instead.

The DC for the check depends on the situation: DC 15 if the language is in the same group as a language the hero has as a Read/Write Language or Speak Language skill; DC 20 if the language is unrelated to any other languages the hero knows; and DC 25 if the language is ancient or unique. With this special ability, a Smart hero can glean enough meaning from a conversation or document to ascertain the basic message, but this ability in no way simulates actually being able to converse or fluently read and write in a given language.

A single check covers roughly one minute of a spoken language or one page of a written language.

---

Exploit Weakness: After 1 round of combat, the Smart hero can designate one opponent and try to find ways to gain an advantage by using brains over brawn. The Smart hero uses a move action and makes an Intelligence check (DC 15) with a bonus equal to his or her Smart level. If the check succeeds, for the rest of the combat the Smart hero uses his or her Intelligence bonus instead of either Strength or Dexterity bonus on attack rolls as the hero finds ways to outthink his opponent and notices weaknesses in his opponent’s fighting style.

Prerequisite: One talent from the Research Talent Tree.

Charismatic Hero

Coordinate: The Charismatic hero has a knack for getting people to work together. When the hero can spend a full round directing his or her allies and makes a Charisma check (DC 10), the hero provides any of his or her allies within 30 feet a +1 bonus on their attack rolls and skill checks. The bonus lasts for a number of rounds equal to the hero’s Charisma modifier.

The hero can coordinate a number of allies equal to one-half his or her Charismatic level, rounded down (to a minimum of one ally).

---

Inspiration: The Charismatic hero can inspire his or her allies, bolstering them and improving their chances of success. An ally must listen to and observe the Charismatic hero for a full round for the inspiration to take hold, and the hero must make a Charisma check (DC 10). The effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to the hero’s Charisma modifier.

An inspired ally gains a +2 morale bonus on saving throws, attack rolls, and damage rolls.

A Charismatic hero can’t inspire him or herself. The hero can inspire a number of allies equal to one-half his or her Charismatic level, rounded down (to a minimum of one ally).

Prerequisite: Coordinate.

Fast Hero

Evasion: If the Fast hero is exposed to any effect that normally allows a character to attempt a Reflex saving throw for half damage, the Fast hero suffers no damage if he or she makes a successful saving throw. Evasion can only be used when wearing light armor or no armor.

Dedicated Hero
Empathy: The Dedicated hero has a knack for being sensitive to the feelings and thoughts of others without having those feelings and thoughts communicated in any objectively explicit manner. This innate talent provides a bonus on checks involving interaction skills (Bluff, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Perform, and Sense Motive), provided the hero spends at least 1 minute observing his or her target prior to making the skill check. The bonus is equal to the hero’s Dedicated level.

Character History (Pre-Veil): here
Post Veil History: When Helen stepped through the Veil, she thought she was chasing Adam Worth into another time. She came through in the mid-1970s in the world of the game. It was disorienting, to say the least. As time went on, she realized just what had happened and that she needed to stop referring to people as Abnormals, as they preferred to be called Shadowkind here. For the first few years, spent most of her time hunting Worth, convinced that he had traveled through with her. But looking for him caused her to need to do continuous research on the Veil and on Shadowkind to be able to better understand the world around her. As time went on, she became integrated into the new world she had come to inhabit and the urge to leave slipped away.

Roughly a decade after arriving, her research and work with Shadowkind caught the attention of the Knights and she was offered the chance to be squired. Leaping at the opportunity, she jumped into the knightly lifestyle feet first.

AND THEN SHE GOT PROMOTED INTO THE HOARD AND STUDIED SHADOWKIND BUT WAS ALSO A BAD ASS AND CAN SHOOT SHIT LIKE A PRO OKAY.

Chosen Canon Point: 3x20

Personality and Psychology: Helen is quite multi-faceted, which can be expected from all of her years lived. In her time, she has been a daughter, a student, a friend, a lover, a mother, an employer, a therapist, a doctor, a savior, and so much more. Juggling her various roles has given Helen the ability to move fluidly through a variety of emotions at a moment's notice.

She's incredibly intelligent, and seems to only grow more curious and eager to explore the world around her as she grows older. As a young girl, Helen idolized her father, a surgeon and scientist whose work Helen would later continue for many years to come. Even while he tried to shelter her from his work, not wanting to drag her into the ridicule that he received from the scientific community, Helen couldn’t help but hunger to learn everything that she could. She refused to let her curiosity be limited by Victorian gender roles and sat in on courses at Oxford, continuing her education against all odds.

There's a sense of authority that seems to just exude from her, causing others close to her to easily fall in line behind her command. She can be forceful, when pressed, but prefers to take a more diplomatic approach to conflict in most cases. You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, sure, but that doesn’t mean that you have to ruin the whole dozen. Helen tries to balance her various forms of power as much as she can. Exploiting the connections she has forged within various government agencies is not something likes to do, but will, if pushed into a corner. Likewise, while she is perfectly capable with a weapon, she values life enough to execute plenty of control.

Her compassion for all life is one of the key reasons she continues to expand the Sanctuary Network, in hopes of one day making life more pleasant for humans and abnormals - and to hopefully allow them to co-exist someday. Helen’s work and likewise her own life is grounded in the core belief that all things have the right to live a full life. Because of this, she shelters those people and creatures that might be subjected to scrutiny in the common world, while also protecting the world from the more dangerous species that the world is not ready for.

In her personal life, Helen can be humorous and caring, mothering to those that she has raised - whether they be of her blood or not. She jokes when the time is right for it, or other times to break tension. Her heart is guarded, though - as she has been hurt in varying ways by those closest to her. Her once-fiancé John Druitt became the serial killer Jack the Ripper, running into a dark life instead of taking her offered help. Her daughter Ashley was corrupted by her enemy, the Cabal, and turned into a weapon used against her. Ashley died because of these actions, and Helen lost a part of herself with her daughter. The members of her team who remain are now part of what keeps her in the here and now, as she focuses quite strongly on keeping them safe.

Memories Retained or Lost: Helen remembers most of her life, but would need to forget all of the key players in her life that were with her on a daily basis- Will, Henry, Kate, Big Guy. Her memories of her daughter Ashley can remain intact due to the fact that her daughter is now dead, so finding her again isn't a concern. And her memories of her old colleagues (Druitt, Tesla, Watson, and Griffin) can remain since they are so infrequent in her life, that she wouldn't fight to return to them

Powers and Abilities: Due to an experiment in her youth with a source of pure vampiric blood, Helen has been granted the gift of longevity. While it is uncertain if she ages at all, she certainly ages extremely slowly. She can be wounded and killed just like any normal human, but if she is left unharmed, she will carry on and on- and has for over a century. She’s extremely scholarly and has acquired multiple degrees in fields (including an MD, as well as degrees in crypto-zoology and xenobiology). She’s also well versed in self-defense. Helen can fight hand-to-hand, use firearms, and improvise weapons.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession): She came through with a gun. She'd like to keep that. DOESN'T MATTER THAT SHE HAS A NEW FANCY EXCALIBUR. HER GUN FROM HOME HAS SENTIMENTAL VALUE OR SOMETHING IDK.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights? It's basically all the same sort of stuff like she's always done- helping people, saving lives, doing the right thing.

Do you have a preference for which NPC brought in your character? Nah, though I would like to know who she was squired to once upon a time :3

How has your character changed from their canon self? Helen learned great deal about herself in Chicago, mostly in that she can always rebuild. She started in the city with nothing, no connections, no clout. But in the two years that she lived there, she rebuilt her legacy. She created another Sanctuary, built connections in the city’s police force. She made powerful friends who came to her aid when she needed them. While her Sanctuary Network may have started as her father’s idea, his brain child, it was truly hers now. She also learned how deeply family means to her. After adopting a young woman in the city, Kali, she had to face her fears with motherhood and her previous failure in losing her daughter Ashley. It helped her open her heart, which also helped her accept the love of a man, Sonny. Sadly, they were torn apart by the world’s end and thus she finds herself now in Teleios struggling to reconcile that pain.

Are they gaining any abilities from their time in game? Did the game setting take something from them? Her stay in Chicago in Beyond the Rift also granted her an ability to split into two distinct versions of herself (one motherly and compassionate, one focused and methodical).

Why did you choose this character?: Because she’s Amanda Tapping with a British accent…. No, seriously, Helen is a bad ass and a mama bear. She wants to take care of everyone and will break a mother fucker’s arm to keep those she cares about safe. I’ve also been playing her for like 2 years now, so she’s just a natural choice for me to start a new game with.
Give a brief idea of how your character will react to the setting: After experiencing a new and unknown city in her own canon, Helen will roll with the punches. She’ll be intensely curious and happy to explore to figure out just what is going on and how to get herself back so that she can set her own world right, but she won’t be too freaked out to exist.

First Person Sample: [This makes twice in too short of a time that Helen has woken up covered in tubes and wires. She’s taken her time to familiarize herself with the technology provided. Thankfully, she’s been able to piece together a rough idea of just what has happened to her. Her appearance on the network feed is poised, but it’s not hard to tell that she’s more than irritated at the situation.]

My name is Dr. Helen Magnus and I seem to find myself in a rather… interesting predicament. However, I see that I’m not alone in being out of place. Any information that you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

[She pauses, and then decides to just ask the most important question.]

Lovely a city as Minneapolis is, have any of you made any headway on finding a way out?

Third Person Sample: It isn't the first time Helen has fallen asleep at her desk, nor will it be the last. All throughout the previous night, Helen had been scouring the Sanctuary network for a hint, some sort of clue that would bring her closer to an answer. The abnormal she is currently looking to track down has a particularly nasty habit of being able to cover its tracks. Thankfully, Helen's network can keep one step ahead. She was awoken by the beeping alert that the network has found a sign of the abnormal.

Helen raises her head and squints at the screen, wondering just what sort of trick this all is. It only takes her a moment, though, before she's sitting up and reading the screen's downloaded information.

"No..." She says aloud to her empty office. "It's just not possible. Of all places in the world…" She scrolls through the text for a moment longer before accepting it. She lifts her phone and dials the first number of many she knows she'll need to punch in before any plan can be crafted.

"Henry. It's here. Old City must be its next target. We have to move fast. The last city this creature settled in only had three days before signs of the plague began to crop up in the rural areas. Put all hospitals on high alert to start gathering supplies." She pauses as a new beep demands her attention be drawn to the computer screen. "Nevermind that, actually. Find Will and Kate. Bring them to the old bridge. I think our new friend wants to have a chat.”

CHARACTER

Name: Helen Magnus
Canon: Sanctuary
Age: 159
History: here
Point in canon: 3x1
Window Location: In the gardens of her Sanctuary in Old City
Universe: Helen comes from a world where the typical form of life is not all that the world has to offer. She calls them Abnormals, because that’s what her father called them, but they are essentially genetic deviations from the norm. This can be something manifested in a humanoid, giving them the outward appearance of nothing extraordinary, but with a gift or ability that is outside of the typical. Or this can be a whole new species, undocumented in the scientific community.
Abilities: Longevity. Helen ages slower than the normal human. This ability was gained through an experiment with pure vampiric blood.
Possessions: Whatever clothing she is wearing that day, a gun, a knife, and a cell phone.

DÆMON

Name: Percival/”Perry”
Sex: Male
Form: Canadian Lynx - visual
Additional notes: Just behind his front right leg is an eternity symbol (sideways figure 8) in darker fur. It’s small, maybe one a couple inches across.
Why this form: Independent like any feline, and protective of those under her, when I thought of Helen, I couldn’t help but lean towards the big cats. The Lynx are known to be mainly solitary, or to keep a close knit circle. They’re secretive and nocturnal, all characteristics that describe Helen’s life. She exists under the radar, the leader of an organization that shouldn’t exist. The Abnormal world is hidden from that of the general population, and because of that, Helen’s life is kept secret as well.
